We got a pasting from Ilford’s 1st team, with only your captain getting a consolation half-point on top board !
- Simon’s opponent reacted passively to the Sicilian dragon and Simon was easily able to equalise and secure the half-point.
- Martin lost a pawn in the opening and was then steamrollered by his opponent’s central pawns.
- Ken was overcome by an improving opponent.
- Myles had an excellent position but alas, blundered a knight.
- Mick battled hard to reach an endgame, but his opponent’s bishop proved superior to his knight.

This was our first ever visit to Witham who have only just joined the Essex league mainly thanks to
Loughton old boy Lyn Stiffell who has recently moved to Witham.
We were outgraded on all boards so credit to Martin and Fred for getting us on the scoresheet.

- Ken lost a couple of pawns in the middle game to a rapidly improving youngster. In his typical style, Ken tried to complicate things, but his opponent comfortably steered the position into a winning endgame.
- Graham and his opponent agreed a draw in the middle game as they were both short of time.
- Fred’s game was exciting with the players attacking on opposite wings. Fred exploited his opponent’s bad bishop and broke through on the kingside and although there was not a checkmate, he managed to swap off pieces to reach an easily winning endgame.
- Les was very slow in developing his pieces and was blown away on the long diagonal when his opponent quickly opened up the position.
- Mick was very unlucky. He easily held his much higher graded opponent and reached a level endgame. He missed an opportunity to pin his opponent’s bishop on the back rank and then sadly shortly afterwards fell to a tactical shot which lost him a piece.
- The quickly improving Kestutis was even unluckier. He reached a winning endgame position with his two rooks and knight crawling all over his opponent’s rearguard. He then won a knight with a superb combination. Alas, he was extremely short of time at this point and subsequently blundered back the piece and eventually lost on time. Chess is a cruel game !
Thanks to those who played.

A tough match against a strong Wanstead II team who were aiming for a top four finish in this league.
- Martin finished his game first. It came down to a Queen and Bishop each and pawn ending when a draw was agreed.
- Good draws by Fred and Kestutis who were heavily out graded.
- Graham lost a pawn in the opening, but managed to win two knights for a rook. However, he was eventually checkmated when he had less than two minutes left.
- Attila was unlucky. He was winning easily two pawns up, but he only had twenty seconds left on his clock for more than a dozen moves and eventually lost his knight which swung the game.
Some good performances against a strong Wanstead team who out graded us on every board.
